Dystopia 08.28.05

DJ AA returned from Jackson, WY last week and reclaimed his laptop. I downloaded this week's show @ werk and the CD burner failed. so, no downloads this week. I'm surprised I didn't get more calls, though. Meh, could be the new crop of students. Could be that the transmitter was wonkey (it was).

Anyway, the setlist is up.

BBC Will Let Programs Be Downloaded

- - - - - - - - - - - -

August 27,2005 | LONDON -- The British Broadcasting Corp. is planning a new service to let Web users download its television and radio programs up to a week after they have aired.

BBC Director General Mark Thompson, who unveiled the plans for the company's "MyBBCPlayer" at the Edinburgh International Television Festival Saturday, said he hoped the service could be active by 2006.

Under the outline he presented, Thompson said the player would let Web users download original BBC radio and television programming from its Web site for as long as seven days after it originally aired.

But complete details weren't released and any plan to make the material available for download would have to be approved by the government-owned broadcaster.

Dystopia 08.21.05

Last night's show was...interesting. DJ AA is back in town, and this means that he has confiscated his computer, the one I have been using. I had to clear all of my stuff off of it, and, in doing so, burned last night's show to CD. Problem was, the order in which the songs were written down on the spreadsheet was different than the order in which the songs were burned. I did a lot of guessing, and was right a good percentage of the time.

Opened the show with a two week old request for American Analogue Set. Then did some Bjork remixes before featuring stuff I got at Salon.

Setlist is up.

Dystopia Unplugged

All weekend I've been running. Started on Saturday when I awoke at seven and started in on building frames for the impending art showand chasing around town. Was rushing around so much I forgot my music this week. Plain left the disc at home, and the patchcord that usually serves to tap the laptop into the main board was missing in action.

So, this week, I played stuff right out of the studio. Which means I was able to take requests. And I only got one caller. Dustin didn't even call, and he always calls looking to hear some Pink Floyd. Guess that means I was doing it right.

Started off with some rockabilly, moved to ska, then some hip-hop, got psychedellic for a while, and rocked out the last 45 minutes. The setlist is up.

Next week I'll be filling requests and suggestions I've received recently, including some Bjork remixes, DJ Jedi, and openig the show with American Analogue Set.

Dropdown Dystopia Update

Not sure why, but Blogger is adding an extra line, being radiodystopia.blogspot.com to the URLs for the bands I listed in my post from last week. Anyway, I added all of those bands to the BANDS drop-down menu to the right.

HMV to install download stations in their stores

The number of legal downloads tripled to 180 million worldwide in the first half of 2005, according to the International Federation of Phonographic Industries (IFPI).

When most folks think of legally downloaded music, they think of pay services such as the iTunes Music Store, Napster 1.0, Virgin, and now, HMV. REMEMBER, there are thousands of legitimate FREE legal download sites out there as well, allowing you to test drive the music before plunking down your hard earned cash fir it.

Dystopia 08.07.05

The smoke was thick in the valley as I rode my bike into the studio
tonight. Gray haze and that campfire smell. It's summer in Missoula.

Still trolling though the 2G Bittorrent file I picked up over @ SXSW. A lot of really great stuff tonight, and I'll be adding some of my favorites to the BANDS drop-down on the sidebar here at Radio Dystopia Online.

The setlist is up.

Note to all of you emo freaks out there: Depression is just anger without motivation. Take your St. John's Wort, drink some coffee + stop your bellyachin'. (This arises from me playing The Winter Pageant, who, according to one reviewer, sound like Blonde Redhead if Elliot Smith were the singer.)

Some favorites from tonight's show....

The Pretty Please

The Priests

The Real Heros

The
Shore

The
Stepbrothers

The Strange
Boys

The Sundresses

The Sweethearts

The Telepathic Butterflies

The Thermals

The Things

The Trews

The Turbo AC's

The Vacation

Streaming music

While I focus upon legally downloaded music on Radio Dystopia, there are plenty of other legal means to listen to music online. There's a great article discussing that over @ Slate.

Also, someone recently asked me why I only play MP3s on my show. Why not WMVs? Well, I don't play AAC files, or .shn files or even mp4s. I focus on MP3s because all computers can play them, and many devices exist besides computers with which to play them as well. I am not singling out Windows or Apple, but merely playing the format that is most widely available to the largest number of people, thereby exposing large quantities of people to new music.

You know the drill.
