Taken as a whole, they are a soundtrack to a wandering soul in search of his own truth on a desolate landscape of heartache, confusion, yearning and hope. All good art extrapolates an inner truth, or a search for it, and with I Got Lucky Dendy succeeds in carving a definitive path through the darkness of abandoned empty roads followed on late night drives, of loud bars where quiet conversations bring redemption and on porches on the summer where friends gather to play music and knock back a few PBRs.

Dendy grew up in the South and moved to Montana in the mid 1990s. His education and intelligence betray themselves in his well rendered lyrics which never come off as trite or contrived. Imagine Springsteen's Greetings done in the style of The Ghost of Tom Joad with a healthy dose of whiskey sung in a roadhouse somewhere into which you stumbled after a long day of driving across the Dakotas in the heat of summer and you might have an idea of how I Got Lucky sounds. You don't need to imagine, though, because you can hear samples of the songs which appear on the disc over at John's website. Explore the site a little, then click BUY MY CD to listen to clips. You'll be taken to the CD BABY page where the clips are available in MP3 streams and where you can get the disc.

It's the first CD I've bought in a long time, having migrated my listening habits mostly to digital because of the radio show I do over at KBGA. It's a $15 well spent, and I have been listening to the album for two solid straight days. The flow of the songs from one into the next is well thought-out, and illustrates the care that went into selecting the songs that appear on the album, as well as the order in which they appear.

The disc opens with a bluegrass infused "Where are You?". After the bleak Never Was Golden, which includes the brilliant metaphor of a "hazelnut heart", we get Tattoo, whose lyrics are one-liner after another through the better part of the song (I can't give away the punchline, sorry), and then the very short "Communist Party", a playful song whose social commentary won't be lost on most listeners. Dendy then lays down Gardiner River Bridge, an ill-named(?) song that remembers walking across the bridge over the Yellowstone River in Gardiner, Montana, thinking about lost love. He's smart enough not to dwell in self-pity, and pokes fun at the emo kids with the driving bluegrass tinged Restless. You can almost hear the laughter and the clanking of empty beer bottles on the porch on this one. With "Men", Dendy pays tribute to some of his close friends and what makes them strong human beings before taking a country-western turn with "Just Because", a favorite. "Stupid to Them" nods back to "Men" with its message about the importance of being true to oneself, which Dendy questions on Selling Myself. The album closes with a hard song that features one of my favorite lyrics I've ever heard Dendy sing, "...the only part of me that's still grieving/is you". Nobody Home is a kick in the gut because of its honesty and rawness.

The danger with songs of this intensity is that the singer might fall into the depths of self-loathing and depression that make for the bad emo-band poetry written with black ink on black paper in the darkness of one's mid-western suburban basement. Instead, Dendy sings with self-confidence and honesty that is missing from much of the mainstream music being released today.

BUY THE ALBUM

You can also pick up the album by catching John play out. He's scheduled to play some Montana shows. If you get a chance to check him out and you live in Helena, Bozeman or Livingston, you can see John play. Wally Catton and Marcus Chebul were singled out Saturday night by a group of allegedly teenage thugs because of their appearance, and were attacked and beaten by these unknown assailants.

Now, I don't know Marcus, but Wally is a friend of mine. He's a is a student at The University of Montana, and an expert on graphic novels. His drawings are incredible, and he has never hurt anyone. He exists for the sole purpose of bringing beauty into the world, and is an amazing human being.

Violence is making more regular appearances in our community, and when we are silent, we are allowing it to occur. We can be silent no longer. Missoula police are looking for leads about the beating on Saturday. If anyone has any information about the attack, please call the Missoula Police Department 24 hours a day at (406) 523-4777 or Monday through Friday 8AM-5PM at (406) 258-4672. The suspect vehicle was described by witnesses as a red sport utility vehicle, with a partial license plate beginning 4-B925.

If you or someone you know is a victim of violence, the Student Assault Resource Center (SARC) can help. They have a 24 hour hotline at (406) 243-6559, which is staffed by trained SARC advocates who provide confidential information and peer counseling over the telephone. Advocates can also refer you to other resources to help in dealing with violence on campus or within the Missoula community. SARC is located at the Curry Health Center on the University of Montana Campus at 634 Eddy Street.

This is not the first time an assault of this nature occurred. Stop the violence.

See you on Sunday night. Harvey Danger is releasing their newest album on their website for free. This is not a limited release, and the album will be up on the site for a long time, according to them.

Whether or not people will buy something they can get for free is obviously a big question, and there are facts and figures to support both sides of the argument. We think it’s not only possible, but likely. The more fundamental challenge is ensuring people have access to your work to begin with....

Of course, the CD will also be for sale on the site, as well as in fine independent record stores across the country, in a deluxe package that includes a 30-minute bonus disc that serves as a companion piece to the record proper (retail price for the package is $11.99).

Expect to hear it this week if all goes well.

Get Little By Little...

Dystopia 09.25.05

Headphone Dissonance.

Limited Dystopia

So. After a much deserved Dystopia hiatus last week (Thanks to DJ AA for filling my show for me) I'm back, and the MP3 disc I burned from an iTunes playlist is all out of whack. The songs are not in the order in which iTunes printed the playlist, and the songs are, of course, unfamiliar, so I'm having to do a little guesswork as to what's what. Started on Saturday when I awoke at seven and started in on building frames for the impending art showand chasing around town. Was rushing around so much I forgot my music this week. Plain left the disc at home, and the patchcord that usually serves to tap the laptop into the main board was missing in action.

So, this week, I played stuff right out of the studio. Which means I was able to take requests. And I only got one caller. Dustin didn't even call, and he always calls looking to hear some Pink Floyd. Guess that means I was doing it right.

Started off with some rockabilly, moved to ska, then some hip-hop, got psychedellic for a while, and rocked out the last 45 minutes. There's a great article discussing that over @ Slate.

Also, someone recently asked me why I only play MP3s on my show. Why not WMVs? Well, I don't play AAC files, or .shn files or even mp4s. I focus on MP3s because all computers can play them, and many devices exist besides computers with which to play them as well. I am not singling out Windows or Apple, but merely playing the format that is most widely available to the largest number of people, thereby exposing large quantities of people to new music.

You know the drill.

Maxmuis

World Dystopia 08.03.05

I was hella bored? I just filled a shift for the World Music show, and the guy that came in after me to take over has a hip hop show. He is the whitest kid I've ever seen + he plays hip hop? The opening song, something by the Handsome Boy Modeling School, and even that sounded white. Now I know, I know, white boys can play hip hop. The Beastie Boys are a fine example of that. But the Handsome Boys Modeling School? C'mon. Gimmie a break.

Now I know, I know, I shouldn't dis on my fellow DJs, but please. He called to tell me he had arrived, and he kept saying things like "yo" and "dude" and "peace". Knock it off, pal.

So Day called me around 7 to fill in @ 8 for the World show. I know very little about world music, but I said I'd do it. It was fun. I learned a lot, and played some excellent music. <s>I even ripped a few discs</s>. I mean, I'll even be checking out some of the music I played. Really good stuff. Particularly the The Rough Guide to Italia Nova (those Rough Guide albums are great) and the Women of Istanbul, from 1998, and State of Bengal Vs. Paban Das Baul. The second hour of the show melted into an amaglam of all kinds of stuff, stating with Bjork, whom i will be featuring on an upcoming Radio Dystopia show, and Aereogramme, both from Iceland. It just sort of degenerated from there, and I played whatever I wanted. After all, aren't we all of the same world? So it fit the world music theme, right?
Get the entire setlist here

Until Next week...

Right click. Instead, I headed over to Seattle to the Highway 99 Blues Club,"An exciting new venue for the blues culture and music of America. Housed in a 1909 brick building on the Seattle waterfront, the Highway 99 Blues Club is inspired by the juke joints of The South and neighborhood blues clubs of Chicago." The main attraction was Rosie de Let an amazing zydeco singer from the rural town of Church Point, Louisiana. Was great to hang out with DJ Double A during his brief visit to town , up from Jackson. Big thanks to him for the use of his laptop all summer while I save up some cash to purchase a new machine of my own. Without him, it would be very difficult to bring you the mp3 love each week.

It's good to see that Open source P2P projects haven't been hurt by the recent Grokster ruling in the Supreme court. And while legal downloads are on the rise, people increasingly ignore the other, free, legal places available to them which allow downloading of music. If you are a Firefox user, you should surf over to their plugins page and pick up Download Them All, which scans a webpage for all available files and then downloads the ones you tell it to download. It has settings which let you filter for specific types of files, like the mp3. Good stuff.

<align-center></align>

Dystopia 07-17-05

Great show tonight. Started off with The Zambonis, a band that plays only hockey oriented music, a band I learned about via my boss, who is a goalie on the co-ed league in town. Then, of course, more stuff from SXSW. Topped off by some hidden tracks from Giant Drag .

I love these guys.

They are out of Orange County, CA. Hillarious "about"page. I cannot remember how I heard about them, but they were also featured @XSW. I bought their EP @ Amazon for cheap + emailed them. Learned their new album is due out in September, and that there are 2 hidden tracks on their about page -- one is a Beach Boys cover, the other is a Journey cover. Both hilarous.

Setlist available @ Spinitron

Right Click. My boyfriend listens to your station. Could
you record me this following message for me to give to him and email me it
as an mp3 or wav file? Please please?
Also mention that it is you reading it for him and your station. For
example.... (Hi Manuel this is _______ from Radio __________in _city_____
and I have a message for you.... )

Manuel, I love you with all my heart and I have changed for the better. I am
going to make you happy you have to trust me on this one. I have promised
you and promised myself. I love you and your stripey socks. I want all our
days to be happy together and to be paradise. Love you and miss you - Kris (italics and bold mine)

If you can do this for me I will be eternally grateful. Please send the mp3
or wav file to [email address suppressed].

Thank you so so much
:)

I wrote her back, saying I would carry out her request, but as I was looking at the email again this afternoon, I noticed the discrepancy in names.

Hmmmmmm. I will still execute the request. Now I am very interested to see where this "love story" ends up.

Also, picked up Giant Drag's EP over @ Amazon for cheap. I am stoked to get it, as I have been listening to the two songs I have of theirs non-stop since I downloaded them. I will of course continue highlighting the SXSW music I have come to love, as well as a few surprises. You can, as usual, find the setlist over at Spinitron. Click Public Playlists then KBGA, then Radio Dystopia. the setlist won't be up until the show starts tonight at 10PM, MST. You can also stream the show from the KBGA site.

I was at my locally owned independent record store yesterday, and I noticed that Son Volt has a new album due out next Sunday, Okemah And The Melody Of Riot. On their site, you can't listen to one of the tracks from the new album, but there's a link to your the media giant that thinks it runs the world of legally downloaded music. At least on Jay's site , you can download some rare tracks.

I also noticed that many musicians, including Son Volt, are utilizing Micro$oft's horrible Spaces service to host their music. I understand that struggling musicians need cheap places to put their music. But when established artists stand on the shoulders of a corporate giant I just shake my head.

When ArmyWife told me that The Doors have gotten back together and are touring, I couldn't believe it. Guess it's old news. The Doors 21st Century are even touring. There's quite a write-up of the whole process over at The Doors' official site. Ian Astbury, the former lead singer for The Cult. While I think it would be interesting to see one of these shows, as the rest of the band is left intact, I think it's a little overkill, and my bet is that it's a bunch of old guys reliving their glory days. I say, leave the past in the past, and let The Doors' music stand on its own. But I guess they aren't ready to do that, as further evidenced by their recent collaborations with many of the "hip" DJs of the mainstream electronica world. I'll feature some clips of that atrocity on tonight's Radio Dystopia.

Most importantly, however, I am proud to announce that I'll be featuring three tracks from Dextrometh, as he's sometimes known onstage and in the studio. Dex recently started his own record label in order to sell his huge body of work, as well as featuring other musicians and artists from Northeast and Southern Ohio. Many tracks are available for preview over at Scary!Records Dex's quiet guitar and meandering notes build interesting melodies complimented by his smooth voice. Recently, he's been delving into themes of exploration along the lines of Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner, as well as thinking about moving into a more abstract noise-collage vein again, which he has moved away from in recent years.

<

Right-click. But, come on, Lisa, you can't be serious. The only good radio out there right now is independent radio or college radio. NPR too, of course, but I know the NPR station in Kent, OH (at least the last time I listened to it)plays only classical music all day long. There is so much better public radio available out there. (WKSU was the only NPR station that I could receive).

But I got off on a tangent. Mainstream radio sucks. And for the very reason you give in your post complaining about podcasting: the DJs have no say.

A DJ at the station where I work recently left for a paying job (we are all volunteers) at Clear Channel. Who could blame him? Jobs are tough to find in Missoula, MT. But he has less than 5% say in what he plays. And the programming is heavily weighted with commercials. Very little time for music.

Yes, DJs like Kid Leo, Wolfman Jack, B.B. King and Little Steven were great. Little Steven STILL is great, and for those of you, like me, who can't catch his radio show on a radio near you, you can catch it at Little Steven's Underground Garage. It rocks.) But the days of great DJs are over. Never again will a DJ "break" a band. Never again will a DJ like Kid Leo bring so much awareness to someone like Springsteen that his shows in Cleveland became legendary in the late 70's/early 80's. Never again will a DJ like Eric Olson who did "Cool Tunes" on Cleveland radio back in the late 80s/early 90s (yo, Eric! --and, no, not a suck-up, just true) play the music that he enjoys, exposing audiences to a wide variety of programming.

Maybe you're too young to remember, Lisa, the days when WMMS won the Rolling Stone magazine "Best Radio Station of the Year" award. Repeatedly. For seven years or something like that. And then it was discovered that WMMS was stuffing the ballot box. That was when I began to lose faith in radio.

And, having traveled the country literally coast to coast in a van over the past 2 years, I have heard radio in almost every state in the lower 48. I'm here to tell you, Lisa, it's all the same. And it all sucks.

And satellite radio? A decent alternative, but, as the Master of all Things mentions, it won't get you away from the same stuff you listen to all of the time. And even satellite radio is repetitive if you listen to it long enough.

No, the future of "radio" is podcasting, streaming radio done by independents, and other forms of pirate radio.

2005.26.06 Dystopia

New Setlist is up.

Spinitron still a little buggy.
